Indian Land, SC

Indian Land is an unincorporated town in Lancaster County, SC, adjacent to the area of Ballantyne, NC to its north, Waxhaw, NC to its east, and Fort Mill, SC to its west. Indian land is a fast growing area with lots of new development, both commercial and residential. While Indian land doesn’t have a historic downtown center like so many of the towns surrounding Charlotte do, Waxhaw and Fort Mill, which are both close by, do! Indian land is also close to the Ballantyne town center, soon will have a new modern town center, and is close to the big city life of Charlotte.

Highway 521 is the major thoroughfare through the community of Indian land and it connects the Ballantyne area of Charlotte with Lancaster, SC. Roads around here love to change names without turns…..when heading north from Lancaster, SC towards Charlotte, the main road is called 521 or Lancaster Highway as it goes through Indian land. The road changes to Johnston Rd as you head through Ballantyne, and then turns into Park Rd as you continue towards Uptown Charlotte which is 30-45 minutes away depending on the time of day and traffic. Charlotte has all the big city amenities such as an international airport, professional sports teams, art museums, and cultural activities.

The community of Indian Land may not have a historic town center like Waxhaw and Fort Mill, but they have everything you need close by…..There are grocery stores from Publix, Harris Teeter, Aldi, Lidl, and Walmart all within the borders of Indian land and others close by in Ballantyne. There is retail shopping at Promenade at Carolina Reserve Plaza that includes T.J. Maxx, Burlington, Hobby Lobby, Home Goods, and more. There are restaurants, medical offices, and a movie theater, Red Stone Cinemas. Soon there will be two hospitals close by; one in Indian Land itself associated with MUSC estimated to be open in 2025, and the other just over the border in Ballantyne associated with Novant Health, estimated to be open in 2022.

And they’re presently building a large 200-acre mixed-use commercial development called Cross Ridge Center on 521 in Indian Land. This area will have office, retail, and restaurant space, as well as the recently built conference and event center and the Upper Palmetto YMCA. This will be a shopping and dining destination similar to Waverly and Blakeney in South Charlotte.

Indian Land is in South Carolina which has lower taxes than the Charlotte Mecklenburg area. And if you’re over 65, there are other advantages to living in South Carolina as well.

Indian Land is home to Sun City Carolina Lakes, a large Del Webb active adult community, with two large community centers, an 18-hole public golf course, and miles of walking trails.
There are many other established neighborhoods in Indian Land, many of which are less than 10 years old. And they are still building more! Some of the future single family home neighborhoods coming to the Indian land are Wilson Creek by KB Homes, Ridgecrest by Toll Brothers, and Preserve at Barber Rock by Taylor Morrison.
