Belmont is located only 12 miles west of Uptown Charlotte, easily accessed by I 85. Belmont is located in Gaston County, which borders the Charlotte Mecklenburg County line. This former textile mill town has a great small town feel and a sense of community. The name Belmont means beautiful mountain and takes this name from nearby Crowders’ Mountain. The downtown area has been experiencing redevelopment and revitalization in the past several years. Belmont is flanked by two rivers, the Catawba and the South Fork River. This gives the town abundant access to waterways for water activities such as kayaking, boating, fishing, etc.

Crowders Mountain, part of the NC state park system, offers 11 trails from easy meadow walks to strenuous hikes. It also has fishing, camping and rock climbing. From the top of the mountain you will have 25 mile-views of Charlotte and the surrounding area. This is a favorite day trip for many people from Charlotte.

Belmont Abbey College is a private catholic liberal arts college, established by Benedictine monks in 1876. The college is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It is the only catholic college between Virginia and Florida.

The Charlotte Douglas International airport is only 7 miles east, where American Airlines has an established major hub. American Airlines, Delta, and United are the 3 major carriers with some service offered by small carriers like JetBlue. The light rail extension has been recently approved which will soon offer light rail service from Belmont to the airport.
Kevin Loftin Riverfront Park has 10 acres with canoe and kayak launches, a public boat launch, walking paths and 2 fishing piers.

The world-class Daniel Stowe Botanical Gardens is 380 acres of meadows, woodlands and lakefront property. Established in 1991, it has a 13,500 square foot Visitor Pavilion with a 100 year old stained glass dome. There are 8 garden rooms and 12 fountains. The Orchid Conservatory is a five story glass building with a waterfall, tropical plants and showy orchids. Hike the 3 miles of walking trails. Enjoy a picnic on the grounds. Walk through the Butterfly Bungalow. On Wednesdays, throughout the summer months, there are family friendly movies with food truck offerings.

The US Whitewater Center is also located in Belmont. This attraction is located on 1300 acres and has outdoor facilities for many athletic pastimes including ice skating, whitewater rafting, kayaking, canoeing, rock climbing, mountain biking and hiking. Participate in the River Jam Race, a 5k/10k run on every second Thursday, May through September. Memorial Day and the Fourth of July are celebrated with an outdoor concert and fireworks. Most weekends in the summer are filled with live music concerts.

The Belmont town center is a hub for restaurants, shops, and other activities. Here’s a fun fact. Nellie’s Southern Kitchen was started by the father of the Jonas Brothers. Of course there is live music offered at the restaurant. Check out the Catawba Antiques Mall, with over 300 booths of merchandise. There are several breweries in this area as well.

The average house price in Belmont is $325,000. There are charming renovated mill homes, new construction homes, and townhomes near the downtown area. Just outside the city limits, water access is being taken advantage of with new construction homes around some older established neighborhoods.
